How should I list freelance jobs on my resume?

We Answered:

I would list yourself as a consultant instead of freelancer (it sounds more professional). For Job 3, list the types of businesses you consulted for (even list their names, if appropriate) and a "Top 3" list of responsibilities. Focus on your biggest or most successful projects.

For Job 2, I would first list your title as consultant and put the timeframe that you worked part-time for that company. Then list a separate title with whatever your title was for that company and put the timeframe that you worked full-time. Treat these as two separate jobs. For example, it could look like this:

Consultant, Job 2 (January 2003-December 2004)
- Provided strategic planning recommendations to the president of research
- Traveled to more than 35 locations across the U.S. to survey franchise managers on operational procedures; developed results report and presented to board of directors

Manager of Research and Development, Job 2 (January 2005-February 2006)
- Put whatever you did here and so on...

Hope this helps!

How do i pick up freelance jobs?

We Answered:

It is very difficult to get work online. At one time it was quite easy, but since the recession less businesses want work done or do it inhouse with dreamweaver / expression / frontpage / yahoo sitebuilder, and more recently unemployed people are looking for freelance work.

Sites like rentacoder used to be ok, but all the work now goes to the lowest bidder who is usually in a developing country working for what would be below-poverty wages in the west, or to 13 year old script kiddies making some extra pocket money.

What you really need is a cv/resume and more importantly a portfolio. Your portfolio should be both a printed book you can take to interviews and clients and an interactive portfolio website. You can print the book yourself and have it spiral bound / put it in polypockets in a presentation binder, or you can use a company like lulu.com to print it for you.

Also, if you publish code snippets as part of the portfolio, make double sure any passwords are anonymised - e.g. don't publish a few lines with
mysql_connect('localhost', 'realusername', 'realpassword')... I know this sounds obvious but it is easily done.

How to put freelance jobs on resume?

We Answered:

Hello hurrdurr :

Think a little bigger. Your experience may be better suited in a CV (curriculum Vitae). These outline a breadth of experience and serve to show what you have done as opposed to a resume that is good for outlining if you are experienced and qualified for a specific job. In either case, be sure to be thorough and to enumerate how what you did gave value to your client/boss of the assignment/job you were a part of completing. Bear in mind McDonald's and your clients each had something to gain by selecting you as opposed to your constituents.

McDonalds is a name but you also have a name and reputation. McDonald's established themselves selling hamburgers, hurrdurr is establishing him/herself to be "a resourceful web-design and graphics design consultant" "with a reputation of excellent work, client relations and continuous improvement". Your name, as opposed to McDonald's', is what really matters so be sure to include a few of your happy clients as references so whoever is hiring you can hear how great you were with them and get that much more reason to bring you on to their team.

I have linked to a great video showing how to do this below. It is called "Developing Your Value Proposition" and answers in more detail what steps to take when writing your value proposition (or resume - whatever you call it), so that the reader will understand what benefit they will have by hiring you in terms of resourcefulness, savings, time, money, etc.
