Career path dilemma. Get MBA to take over family business or. . . ?We Answered:
I have a similar dilemma as well. That's a lot of money to pass up, but ultimately money won't make you happy if the majority of your time spent is on projects or endeavors you find unfulfilling are dissatisfying. Sounds like you have a nice little cushion right now to pursue your interests and still live well. Are you only considering the MBA so that you can get that money? Are you willing to spend two years full time doing something other than music or the arts? Will the money make the sacrifice worth it? And how much more do you need to do the things you want? What if the business was only worth another 5 million? Or 2 million? Do you have a number or purpose for that money?Good luck, chief.

Spiritually Speaking -- what should I study going back to college? We Answered:
I say validate yourself! You have been using your skills to get byfor several years. Since your husband has even less chance
of getting work in this job market it doesn't make sense to
do something that will make it harder to survive. Maybe there
is something the two of you can do together. You could learn
to rehab apartments or houses and you could do the extra
job of writing a story, with pics, for magazines. Maybe get
sponsored by a hardware firm.
There are ways to earn a living - thinking outside the box.
No matter what you do, you gotta keep track of the money.
Getting a student loan would almost be suicidal in today's job market.

Is this assigned 2 months term of payment legal? We Answered:
Nothing inherently illegal about it. Depends on the terms of the contract, and the invoice. It's easiest to deal with this at the beginning of the contract. When I have a client sign a retainer agreement, the retainer says that an account is due immediately, and interest will begin accruing 30 days after the invoice date. Also states the percentage of the interest.
If that isn't there...well, the account should still have a term in it about when it is due, regardless. Within reason, you can theoretically hold the client to it even if there's no express language in the contract.
Trouble is this: What's the remedy?
Let's suppose you decided that 45-60 days wasn't acceptable. What can you do about it? And the answer is basically "Absolutely nothing". I mean, you could sue, but that will take a lot longer than 60 days to get a result.
Put a term in your contract about the rate of interest on overdue accounts and when the interest starts to accrue. You should probably get legal advice first to determine what legal interest is in our jurisdiction. Then you could insist on interest when they dragged their feet.

I have a career path dilemma. Get my MBA to take over family business or . . .?We Answered:
Based on the information you provided, I would advise you not to take over your uncle's business. Like you said, you already have plenty of money to lead the kind of life you want, so what really would be the motivation for venturing into a business you currently have no interest in?I took over our family business last year. Like you I was a double major in two fields that had nothing to do with my family's business. I was 23 when I took over and it was more out of obligation that I decided to do so. The difference is that I had somewhat of an interest in the field. Yet the major driving force for me was my family. People can't imagine how much we have struggled and sacrificed for this goal. That is my motivation.
You have to be conscious of the fact that you could end up in a job you don't feel fulfilled in and that can make you extremely unhappy. Sounds to me like you wouldnt be suited for that kind of career. But maybe you should ask yourself if this is the kind of thing you could become passionate about. Will it suit your personality? Can you be successful at it? Then think of the worse possible scenario for each decision and ask yourself if you can live with that outcome. In the end, it's all about what you want out of life. For me, it's all about being happy and being a good person. That's what I want out of life and I choose things that will help me come closer to that goal. I think you should choose to be involved in that which will help you achieve yours. Hope this perspective helps. Best wishes.
