It seems like you have a lot on your shoulders right now, and I really feel for you! What I do might not be a perfect fit for you, but it's working well for me so I feel good about recommending it.

I'm a consultant for the Pampered Chef company. In other words, I own a home based business selling cooking tools and I receive a commission from my sales. This company has been in existance for more than 27 years and has an excellent reputation for both ethical business practices and high quality products. In my experience it has been both profitable and really fun. (Let's face it, my job is going to parties!)

Starting up with the Pampered Chef is not free, but it is very reasonable. The new consultant's kit costs $155 and contains products to use in demonstrations, training materials, and the business supplies that you will need to get started.

I do not think that it can pay your rent right away - it takes some time to build up a customer base and fill up your scheudle with shows. What I do think is that this could be a good source of supplemental income to help hold you over while you continue to search for a day job. It will also provide some security in case your day job dosen't work out. Given time, a Pampered Chef business does have the potential to support your family and pay your rent. The consultants that I know who do it full time spent about three years building their businesses before they could quit their jobs.

you've got your list so just get going on it - stop thinking about it.
start by setting up house ground rules and consequences - and stick with it. post them around the house. this is probably the most important.
have a family meeting remind everyone you are all a team. and if they mess up, you all mess up. try for unemployment benefits - and write those 5 articles first thing in the morning if you can. set aside an hour every day to clean a box or two. get the kids to help.
