Any company that asks for money is a scam. Please be sensible about this, especially since you have a child to support. A responsible mother does not blow her last five dollars on a long shot. A responsible mother does not go out chasing a childish dream when she doesn't even have a job. How are you going to feed your daughter when your last few dollars run out? It is your responsibility to support her, not your parents or the government. Besides, five bucks isn't going to be enough to get you in. Your time would be better spent going out to look for another job today. All the best.
By the way, you know they take anyone who is willing to pay, right? Everyone around here gets mailings from them all the time. Having an agency doesn't mean they think or will try to get you a job.
*ETA* It's good that you have at least some employment, but freelance work doesn't cut it. I used to be a freelance writer as well. Again, focus on getting steady employment to help you work your way through college. A college degree is what will help guarantee that you are able to give your daughter the life she deserves. One thing which may help would be to learn the difference between advise and advice. You are looking for advice. It wouldn't hurt to check your printed materials for typos and grammatical errors. Especially, if you are seeking work as a commercial writer. The first things I notice, when trying to find writers for some of my projects, is spelling and grammar. If it is not up to snuff, I look elsewhere.

Now for some advice. I hire writers on-line. To gain some experience while making a little money, try bidding for some of the jobs listed . You are able to then add the work you do to your portfolio.
