Entry Level Writing And Editing Jobs

Joe Said:

Should I stop my job search and go to grad school?

We Answered:

Why do people keep majoring with things like English and of all things Philosophy.... goodness me... This is the 21st century, philosophers lost use ages ago, unless you include Steven Hawking(thats not a flame, read up on what he actually does). You should of majored in something people will actually need. Maybe you can go back and do Journalism?

What does this potential employer want in a writing sample?

We Answered:

It's best to give a copy of the magazine issue you're in, especially if your name is in it. You ask: "What do they want?" Think about it. You're going to be in editorial services. This means they want to analyze your use of syntax and diction. They want to assess your ability to adhere to the rules of English. Furthermore, they want to get a sense of your individual writing style.

Please don't give them a photoslopy (unless you have no other choice, and if it does come to that, at least put a plastic sleeve over it).

It's best to provide your earlier work (i.e., press releases, published articles, etc., etc.) **together with** an original treatise of your own as the pièce de résistance. It should showcase your writing style as well as your convictions or knowledge.

Edited to add: Being that your background is light on writing, now is the time to prove that you can write!

How much would an entry-level Music Programming Coordinator make at a radio station?

We Answered:

Where to start....First of all, the music business has gone past the Glory Days of hands on music production and programming. Everything nowadays is done on the computer through the SMARTS or other systems the owners have purchased. Most production work for commercials is done by a production company for the ad agency who buys air time for their clients. With the advent of computer and digital programming, most of the DJ's don't even touch the controls unless it's to turn their mike on to tag the end of a song. I've found through the years that the human element in radio has diminished to a minimum. I would suggest selling airtime for a station, once you get a "pipeline" going, you can have a pretty decent income. Unless you go to a very small market, I don't think you will find the job you describe so elquently in your question.

Writing issues for psychologists?

We Answered:

You basically want to know what a psychologist does, right? He/she helps people with emotional problems/disorders. They cannot prescribe medicine because they are not medical doctors. You do not have to know alot of Latin to be a psych (but I did because I AM a physician). You don't necessarily have to write well, either.

You DO have to have an inordinate amount of patience with patients (sorry for the pun). You have to be willing to sit and listen to people's problems day in and day out. It's wearying emotionally and alot get burned out in their 40's.

I would recommend you rather try for a licensed clinical social worker. You'd need a masters for that. You would be ethically bound not to repeat anything said by the patient, unless it involved the patient's suicidal ideation or they were talking about killing someone. You MUST protect the patient's confidentiality at all times. Only a court order would absolve you of that.

Good luck. And please: learn to write better.

Has anyone ever had MOnster.com write/edit your resume? if so, how has it worked out for you? is it worth it?

We Answered:

I write my own Resumes and simply list them on the site, also without 'upgrading' to their supposedly high-traffic views.

Monster.com realistically knows very little about you. They only know what you share with them, about your jobs listed on your Resume. So they are either going to take what you alreayd have and flip it around a little bit, add more 'spiffy' words which they claim recruiters look for, etc. Or, they are going to ask you more details about your job. Either way, you can do both of those yourself and use the money for something else.
