Communications Writer Jobs

Wendy Said:

I am trying to get a telecommuting reporter/writer/communications job in LA from the midwest.?

We Answered:

Any particular reason you're set on L.A.?

The thing about reporting is that by nature, it's most often local. Newspapers want journalists to cover stories happening in their area. Area-specific magazines want articles relevant to readers in their location.

So if you want to write stories about L.A., you'd probably be best off moving to L.A., and if you just want to write general stories, then it doesn't matter where you're writing them for.

That being said... I'm assuming you don't have a lot of experience writing right now. Assuming that you don't want to go back to school, I'd recommend either freelancing to magazines, or going to your hometown newspaper and seeing if you can secure a job or internship. Either way, it may benefit you to start off local, although that's not to say that you have to.

You can also check craigslist or similar sites to find telecommuting writing jobs available in LA and elsewhere.

Best of luck.

Adrian Said:

What does it take to become a screen writer, not for books but for movies?

We Answered:

If you are looking to become a screenwriter, a communications major is not your way to go. You want to major in most likely creative writing/film studies. Or pursue an education at a specialty school that focuses on the arts and media.

You should know that communications and creative writing are two very different areas. A communications major typically focuses in journalism, public relations or marketing. Nothing against Comm majors, but they learn how to write facts and in a factual manner. Communications, apart from marketing, doesn't exactly teach the creative side of writing. That is what you need for screenplays.

Creative Writing, on the other hand, hones skills for writing creatively obviously - novels, poems, non-fiction. With an emphasis on film studies, it would help your main goal.

In my opinion, your best bet would be to look at schools with programs focalized in film studies.

In the United States, some of the cable companies offer scholarships and internships to people interested in marketing/communications. maybe there one in your area?

As for hospitality, you could work in a hotel (at the front desk). Might be better pay and easier work than being a waitress.
