Careers In Writing

Jimmy Said:

What kind of careers are out there for writing majors?

We Answered:

As others have answered journalism is one direction. I am a contributing author for technical publications and have over 150 published articles. I do this as a part time occupation as I have other full time employment. Many other authors like me use their writing for supplemental income. Although I have been on a retainer at times I am not currently so if I don't write or if the article is not approved I don't get paid.

Being an author has pluses and minuses. On the down side you often will have many rejections or rewrites before an article is published. People may be critical of your opinions or your facts. Often articles or edited by fellow authors and they will be toughbn critics. You will need to develop a thick skin and confidence to overcome this.

What are some careers in reading, writing, and research?

We Answered:

Maybe be a writer for a newspaper or magazine. You'd have to read to research your stories then write them.

Careers involving writing, culture, and the arts?

We Answered:

Well I can only speak for myself, but as a Art History major, which involves writing, culture, arts, reviewing, reviewing this is what I have chose, or other options in the field. For a undergraduate degree many people major in business, english (creative writing) or a foreign language. I personally chose art history at that time as well and minored in french. Know that these careers in the humanities are difficult at best to obtain, so its in your best interest to be as specific and for lack of a better term marketable. An expert even. Possible careers in art history are...Appraising, Auctions, Teaching, Writing, restoration, conservation, librarian (archiving), museum studies/work, gallery work, sales. If you have any questions feel free to email me and I have other friends in the humanites and I might be able to give better advice if I knew your interests better. Good luck!

Careers in writing that make a good amount of money??

We Answered:

Yeah, I'm in my last two years of high school as well... Being a writer is a hard course to take, and you have to be willing to live off of pork and beans the first couple of years, and you also have to be prepared to write on the side until you have someone (a publisher) that will take you seriously. Us being poor teenagers, no one seems to take us seriously. But heres what I've discovered after years of wanting this career....

1.) Write at least an hour a day. It should be fun. Not a chore.
2.) Let your best friend read what you write. If you don't want them to see what your writing, you're more than welcome to send your ideas to me to bounce off of... I swear I wouldn't ever steal anyones work. haha. But on second thought, don't send your work to people you don't know.
3.) Keep a notebook with you, you never know when an idea will pop into your head, or when you'll see someone who sparks an idea.
4.) Join a critique group, and READ, read, read. it will help you understand what sells and what you need to focus on NOT writing about. lol.
5.)Last but not least... handwritten work is old fashioned and easy to lose.. TYPE everything you write and save it to a "flashdrive" as a back up copy to keep on your keys (which hopefully you keep with you at all times...)

Also, just so you know, writers block CAN and DOES happen. Dont be discouraged if you get writers block, but switch to maybe journaling... even though I don't think your a girl. haha, but yeah, journaling or just lackadaisical writing will still keep you with in requirement #1, but not trying to focus so hard on one particular "book" or subject...

Remember, we've got years.... Also it might be a good idea to find someone who will help support you through college... find a girlfriend who will understand your needs to write, and can help support you money wise.. (although *I* haven't done this one yet.. just cant find myself a good guy, but if you can find a girl, it'll benefit you.)
