I would suggest a liberal arts degree, so you have a wide range of basic knowledge to provide the bases for your characters and plot devices. You'll also want one with a credible education department, obviously.

My personal prejudice is for adaptability, which led me to the liberal arts (despite my technical major). It's been invaluable in the time since (my degree is old enough to run for the US Senate). You might consider one of the "Colleges That Change Lives", a group of 40 well-rounded schools that have excellent reputations for turning out stable thinkers in a wide variety of fields. KZoo is one of those forty, and about half of them are in the Midwest. I can personally vouch for Knox, including Robin Metz as a writing instructor. Also, one of my friends went to KZoo for her advanced degree, and was quite pleased with the place. A couple of family members attended Ripon, and another good friend now teaches at Beloit.
