Writing Business English

Sherry Said:

Should I major in english minor in business or vice verse?

We Answered:

I'm going to be honest with you, a business minor means almost nothing. I was majoring in finance and accounting at Texas Christian University before switching schools to the University of Texas after two years. Because the way the new University I'm attending is set up, I had to declare a minor and I chose business. After taking a few of these business minor classes, I've realized that the minor classes don't give you any insight as to what actually takes place in business, and thats fro m the University of Texas a top 20 business school in the nation.

The only way to get anything out of a business degree is if you actually get into the upper level courses. With a minor you generally take one upper level of each of these courses Finance, Accounting, Business Ethics, Legal Environments of Business, Marketing, and Management. With only one course in each of these, I feel you really only gain surface level and common sense type knowledge.

I would advise you to major in business if you want to take advantage of business courses, but if your passion is writing... pursue it. I was a traditional business major originally and now I'm a sport management major (essentially sports business) because it what I have a passion for.

I hope this helps and best of luck!

Edit: Most advertising programs are not a part of the business schools. At the schools I have been to one was in a separate advertising and public relations school and the other was in the college of communications. You will not take an advertising class if you only minor in Business. Business does not have advertising in it at all. Marketing and advertising are completely different, please don't get them confused.

Marketing talks about finding your target market, you product, the place, your promotions and the price at which people will buy etc

Advertising is more on the creative side of how to make your commercial/billboard memorable. Consumer Psychology and things of that nature.
