What I do is write the English address in the center and then on the very right side, I write my addresses in the native language of the country I am sending it to.

So, If I write to my friend Kumiko, I write her addy horizontal in English. And on the right side under the stamp, vertical in Japanese.

All countries will recognize your English address format. The problem could have been you wrote it wrong or your penmanship wasn't legible.
