Write English Grammar

Alvin Said:

I want to improve my English. My grammar and written English is not so good. What should I do ?

We Answered:

Reading is the best way to pick up how written English works although I would recommend books as there is a certain of "newspeak" used by newspapers and magazines.

Perhaps a "pen friend" who would be prepared to correct your letters (or emails) would help too.

Marie Said:

how to write?? (English grammar and easy!!!)?

We Answered:

The girl was marveled by the people's applause.

people is the plural of person

People "own" the applause; therefore, the apostrophe goes after people.

Look at it this way. I am not sure what language you speak originally, but this is probably the way that you would write it.

The girl was marveled by people his applause.
The his is shortened to 's. The apostrophe stands for the "hi" in his.

Technically the pronoun that would really go in the place of "his is "their." Just look past that for a moment.

Below answer is correct on the genitive, but read

Marlene Said:

How do I write this? English grammar?

We Answered:

Your first hunch was right; you should say "different from." "Different than" is commonly used but is not truly correct. To remove the uncertainty in this example, expand it. You're trying to apply correct grammar to a colloquially condensed sentence or phrase; that's why it's not working for you. Expand it back to what it should be:
"She wants to do something different from what she's done before."

If you changed the sentence to read "She wants to do something differently than she did it before," then you would, indeed, use "than" because then you'd be comparing actions. When you're comparing nouns, however, you need to use " different from."

Bob Said:

I want to write a book on English grammar . which tips can give me extra help?

We Answered:

Is English your second language? Is your book for ESL learners? If so, grab a copy of Marianne Celce-Murcia's The Grammar Book. The book's richness can be both overwhelming and ambiguous, even, our professor made us study it by pair. You can select the most important points in the book, make sure that these points are the most essential for your target readers to learn. Simplify. Simplify. Simplify.

You cannot teach grammar in isolation so integrate relevant readings and exercises. Good Luck!
