well from the question wording, it seems like you are pretty decent at english. but I really good way to improve is to read the newspaper, since they use sophisticated language and vocabulary, you are bound to improve.
also, try to read challenging novels. You can always ask your English teacher for recommendations to see which ones are up to your level.
Another simple way might be writing in a daily journal. By writing about something fun, you will gradually improve. Good luck!

The best way, outside of lessons or tutoring from a native speaker, is to read a lot and make little notes for yourself about punctuation, grammar and syntax.

I find myself asking the same question. Not only do I see the same problem in the community I live in, also with my nieces and nephews. I say the problem lies with parents that are not taking the time out with their children and the teachers giving up on teaching someone that is resisting their lesson. So what does the school board do..push the kids along.

Not English, in which there's far more reading than writing. Creative Writing (which is not offered everywhere as a major) may serve you well if what you want to write is literary fiction, but it's not much help if you want to write genre fiction, non-fiction, or just write better.

Journalism may help you write more clearly with better organization, but jobs which make use of Journalism degrees are disappearing fast. It might be okay for a writing-on-the-side purpose if your main interest is non-fiction.

Philosophy has a fair amount of reading, but the papers you would be writing must be well-reasoned and clear in their presentation. If you have an interest in Philosophy, I'd choose it over either English or Journalism.

All that said, though, if I were going back to college to study something which would help me as an adult who works and writes on the side, I'd study a non-writing subject which is likely to be of interest to readers. History, probably.

Read some poems with them, make them read in the classroom. Make each student read a paragraph and explain them, give some chocolates and sweets to the kids who read well, this will motivate them to read well and they will do good. Good luck:)
