Don't just get one. Get the easy one first called copyediting for dummies. It's a good intro read. If you are from the USA get 'Copy-editing for Professionals' by Dr edmund Rooney and Oliver Witte. That is expensive but thorough. Dont forget your style books. Again if you are American you have a few to choose from. Start with the Associated Press style book. If you are a Brit use the Gardian or Times style guides. Don't bother with the BBC. The proofreading symbols are also different depending which side of the pond you are on, so dont swat up on American proof marks if you have to learn the Brit ones later. Good luck

Depends on qualifications, experience. Usually it's easier to charge by the document. .30-.45 per word is probably average.
