Listen And Write English

Keith Said:

I can write, read and listen English but I can not say a word. Is it normal?

We Answered:

For your case its normal because what happened to you is that you dont speak it often since its your 3rd language. Most people who are learning foreign language all experience hard time spoken it, simply because they seldom used it. When they speak they used their native language not unless there are foreign people. Writing & reading will be much easier because its just there, you can pick an english book/magazine to read, or you can just sit down & write what you feel, all of this can be do alone. One reason also why it is hard to speak it, is that sometimes if it is not our own language we became shy to spoke any words, thinking that people around us might say that we are too proud. You have to practice speaking it to overcome your problem. You can do it alone in your room, just imagine your talking to someone...remember practice makes perfect.

Maureen Said:

how many words I should learn to speak write & listen like a native english person?

We Answered:

It's not a matter of words, it's a matter of grammar and phonetics. English grammar is not very complicated (from a Spanish speaker point of view) however, the phonetics will take years to master, if ever.

So if you're looking to be understood and understand others, that shouldn't take long, but mastering the language to sound like a native speaker, that's another thing.

Jeanne Said:

English is my second language. Have studied for many years. I listen and write fairly well but not speaking.

We Answered:

You definitely write very well for a non-native speaker. Heck, you write better than many native speakers (just look around on this website!)
Since your main problem seems to be remembering the right words and the grammar rather than pronunciation, it may help if you try to think in English as much as possible in addition to speaking it regularly. If you get used to thinking in English, then it should be easier for the right words and grammar to come to mind when you have to speak.
