It is well known that native Americans are about 80% monolingual. Immigrants may speak three or four languages, but the most commonly studied foreign languages here are Spanish, French, German, Italian (and Greek and Latin for divinity or classics students).
The Chinese and Japanese way of writing is quite intimidating.
