Learn Writing Skills

Kristin Said:

How did you learn these skills?

We Answered:

You learn these things by doing. Kids start learning to listen and speak in their first year of life! When it's time to teach mine to read I'm going to use "Ordinary Parent's Guide to Teaching Reading"by Jessie Wise. I'll start that whenever they seem ready, which will probably be around age 6, give or take a bit. For handwriting I'll use "Cursive First" and again, I'll start that when they seem ready. For composition, I intend to use "Writing With Ease" by Susan Wise Bauer.
You've left something off your list though, what about thinking skills? People don't learn those by osmosis. I'm in the middle of reading Edward de Bono's "Teaching Your Child to Think." That's proving interesting.

Sherri Said:

what books will healp me learn basic writing and reading skills?

We Answered:

I'm currently using "English Grammar in Use, 3rd ed. - A self-study reference and practice books for intermediate students of English -- with answers" by Raymond Murphy

It is very helpful for self study since the grammar lessons are independent of each other and you can easily focus on your weak topics... Each lesson is followed by an exercise so you can easily test yourself. And there is a key answer so you can check how you fared right after answering.

There is also wealth of information available online for free:

Here is an example:
Grammar Rules and Punctuation Rules can be accessed at

http://www.grammarbook.com/english_rules…

Grammar rules discussed in the site include:
Finding Subjects and Verbs, Subject and Verb Agreement, Pronouns, Who vs. Whom, Whoever vs. , Whomever, That vs. Which, Adjectives and Adverbs, Problems with Prepositions, Effective Writing

Punctuation Rules discussed include:
Spacing with Punctuation, Periods, Ellipsis Marks, Commas, Semicolons, Colons, Question Marks, Exclamation Points, Quotation Marks, Parentheses, Apostrophes, Hyphens, Dashes

You may also try the free interactive grammar quizzes after studying just for practice or to asses your progress:
http://www.grammarbook.com/interactive_q…

If you quiz yourself before and after learning the material, then you will have an idea of your strengths and weaknesses and thus prepare better for the tests ahead.

This site is also very helpful:
http://www.englishpage.com/index.html

I'm currently using it to improve my grammar. It's the best self-study aid for studying the tenses I have ever encountered (at least that's what I think so far). Plus there are interactive quizzes that follow each lesson. They are very useful and helpful for me. It might work for you as well.

Good luck on your effort to improve your writing and reading skills.
