I am trying to learn a way to help students of English to write with facility, please help.?We Answered:
Hi. I teach junior high school students in Japan. Like you said, I find that a number of my students have a good command over the language but struggle to express their idea or give their essays a logical flow. The first thing to remember is that perhaps in your students native language, the flow of ideas is different to the way we express things in English. Also keep in mind that writing in another language is very time-consuming and exhausting for a non-native speaker. It can take me up to an hour to write something in Japanese, that would normally take me ten minutes in English.1.) Give them concrete examples of good essays, and mark them up in coloured pen. Make notes of the structure and of how a new idea is marked by a new paragraph etc.
2.) Give them plotting pages, if they are writing a narrative, or spider diagrams/mind maps for essays. Teach them to focus on a main topic and then to give each topic a number of branches. This is a good way to get them to write more than they normally would, and to help keep things organised.
3.) Try to get them to write a little everyday. Choose a random topic and have them write for five or ten minutes on it.
I hope that helps, and if you have any other questions, feel free to e-mail me.
