Tense is the root of English Grammar. If you can teach him tense thoroughly, half the task is done. The best book available for Grammar is written by Wren & Martin. Make him read newspapers and watch english movies.

Sorry, but memorizing grammar rules or vocabulary is NEVER a good way to learn things, in fact it is very inefficient technique to learn! Instead, context is always your best teacher: Use the language as much as you can and in as many different ways as possible. Read, write, speak, listen, understand, communicate! Also, please buy yourself an all-English dictionary that explans words so that you could understand their meanings better.
