Learning English opens up a world of opportunities. These days everyone is trying to sell something. Half of the buyers are Americans, Brits and other English speakers. The other half might speak Chinese or Russian or something. So if you had to learn to speak another language, you could go out and learn Chinese, and then later French, and so on and so on but with English, you get more bang for your buck. Not to mention, the amount of media including movies, shows, music etc. that is popular and in English far exceeds that of any other language.

English isn't bad.

Are you people serious? English is without a doubt one of the simplest languages! There are reasons for it to become so popular all over the world and they are not only historic and political.

English is very easy and follows clear rules. French is far more complex, not only the pronunciation but also the grammar. Same with German (my mother tongue) and most other European languages (I would even say every other European language). Slavic languages are even more complicated, many have more than 4 cases (6 or 7), often times not only the ending but the whole word changes when declined as well. It is terribly hard to learn for example Serbocroatian. On the other hand I personally know many people coming from Eastern Europe that speak almost perfect English.
