- don't use personal pronouns: I, you. say: one.
- don't use "to be.."
- don't use contractions: can't, won't. instead, say: cannot, will not.
- write using only one tense and stick to it; don't write in both past and present.
- use transitions in and between paragraphs such as: however, nevertheless, although, consequently.
- don't be redundant.
- be specific and get to the point of your paper.
- talk about who, what, when, where, why, how.
- give examples.

- edit, edit, edit. don't write your essay last minute just in case you get more ideas over the next few days.
- have other people edit it too. you can even ask your teacher to help you edit before you turn it in.
- read it aloud so you'll be able to tell if it doesn't sound right.
