There is no rule about not ending a sentence with a preposition.
Some people would like such a rule but here is none.

"pay for" is a perfectly good verb

How would you like to pay for your meal ?
by credit card or with cash?

Your sentence can be reworded to "How will you pay for the scholarship fund?"
But it loses meaning because I am not paying for it all.
Or how will you fund the scholarship?
The last version loses some of the meaning. You aren't paying for a scholarship but all of them.

Even with scholarships the sentence loses some meaning.
How will you pay for the scholarships?
it isn't the scholarships themselves that we are talking about.
We want money for the fund. The scholarships are only one part of the fund.
We certainly can't say, "How will we fund the scholarship fund?"

We cannot take out the for.
"How will the scholarship fund be paid?" is unclear whether the money is going out or coming in from the fund.

So there is nothing wrong with the original sentence.

There is another meaning for being "called." Have you heard of people being called to serve their lord? It is a calling in the sense of an inner feeling that it is the right thing to do. Almost spiritual is the calling because this meaning that I am thinking of does not involve actual voices. It is an inner drive, a sense that one should do something that comes from within. So, I would re-word your conclusion from the literal meaning of being called to the spiritual meaning of being called. They are almost the opposite in meaning.
I would say, "Something made him be at that place at that time. It was an almost spiritual transcendence driving him toward the woman he loved and wished to finish out all the days of his life with."
