I am concerned about several items in your post. Your mother has been here for ten years and cannot read or write English? Can she at least speak and understand it? If so, she could have someone read her the questions in English.

Did 'they' say if your Mom was a citizen that you would qualify for top security clearance? I would think because of all the time you and your family spent outside of the U. S. of A. that that alone would bar you from top security clearance. Just don't want you to get your hopes up.

Of course, right now with Bush's politicized "No Child Left Behind" unfunded mandates, children are learning less and less every year. Their way of leaving no child behind is not to help the slower ones catch up but to drag down the faster ones to reduce the gap.

But these adults or teenagers writing so badly on YA clearly got their non-education long before Bush cheated his way into office. So the education system must have already been dumbed down long since. The interesting thing is that when English Language Learners are tested at bilingual schools, they actually do better on the English portion than their monolingual peers, possibly because in teaching them English we overshoot the mark, or perhaps they are just more motivated to learn.

Anyway, I think that some of the factors leading to the degradation of American English are television, video games, the decline of reading for pleasure, the abandonment of teaching thinking skills, decreased parental involvement, poverty, and of course, politics.

basically you just have to go for it...the more you do it the more comfortable you will become...and if someone corrects you don't get embarrassed...instead thank them, they're doing you a service!
When I was learning portuguese I had the same problem but I decided to dive in head first and now people can't tell I'm not brazilian!
