How To Improve Your Writing In English

Geraldine Said:

I have been bred and brought up in England and i want to improve my english particularly Reading...how?

We Answered:

Well, you've got an interesting selection of writers and books there already.
You might also enjoy Michelle Paver's book "Wolf Brother" and the rest of the series ("Spirit Walker" and "Outcast" have already published, but more are still to come). The world of these books is prehistoric northern Europe, and the central character is a boy, Torak. The writing is beautifully vivid without being hard going.

You also want to know how reading improves your English...
If you read books by different authors, you will start to recognise their particular styles of storytelling and their individual use of language. You will see words and phrases used skilfully, sometimes in unexpected ways, and can pick up ideas for your own speech and writing.
In addition to the tricks of storytelling, bringing characters to life, imagining scenery and developing the flow of events (the plot), reading will also teach you about subjects way beyond the subject of 'English literature'.
Take history, for example. Of course you can go and pick up a history reference book. But you can also learn a great deal through fiction. For instance, ancient Romans spring to life in Rosemary Sutcliffe's "The Eagle of the Ninth", while the Second World War is made utterly immediate through "When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit" or "The Diary of Anne Frank", to name just two books.

Other suggestions to improve your English? Keep reading, and try writing short stories or factual articles of your own. They don't need to be long (in fact, short pieces need more discipline) but in each one, try to bring your readers some new angle or idea.

Good luck!
