Refrain from using the words really, very, so, just and like. They "sound" very middle school when written.

Do NOT write sentences that require commas. They are tricky to use and the vast majority of people misuse them. It is better to avoid them altogether. When I attended the University the English Department deducted 30 points for each comma splice or misuse and only deducted 5 points for not using one where a comma was required.

Do not use contractions in formal papers. They are too casual.

Do not use alot/a lot. One is misspelled and the other is too casual. Use often or numerous instead.

Is the exam on the computer or handwritten? If handwritten, spread your words apart to make it easier to read. Cross out mistakes with a single line. Skip a line between sentences.

Do not write as you speak.

The best way to learn to write is to read books.

Do not end sentences with prepositions. That is a mistake. For instance, it is better to write "Does anyone need a pencil with which to write?" then "Does anyone need a pencil to write with?" I know the first sounds wrong, but it isn't. And writing it correctly lends an air of class without much work.
