Good Writing English

Ben Said:

Spanish vs English ideals of good writing - any differences?

We Answered:

It really depends on the purpose of the writing. When I'm reading or redacting technical reports or legal documents I think the standard is exactly the same: It should be straightforward, (free from any evasiveness or obscurity) no matter it is written on spanish or english. Same for newsletter articles, textbooks or any other work in which is very important to transmit an exact idea.

But when the written work is more poetic, when it's important to transmit a feeling, it set a different standard. Because the differences of the two languages are more evident. For instance, in spanish we have gender related articles, you can write: "los astros" (the stars) and give them a male nature or you can write "las estrellas" (the stars) and make the stars female. That's a point of consideration when you are determining the value of a poem or a novel in spanish and it is lost when it is traduced on english, therefore the standard change.

Marcus Said:

What would you like to ask?Tell me how can i make my speaking and writing english very good.?

We Answered:

Hi there! Your written english, so far seems understandable with only a few grammatical errors. I'm not sure how understandable you are when you speak.

I live in the United States and the language training here, is well, hard to come by. Therefore I don't have much of an understanding on the mechanics of learning another language. But what I have noticed for people trying to learn english is really submerging yourself in a culture that uses the english language. Such as in books, movies, social networking sites, or even making a big enough effort to visit an English speaking country.

Isnt texting making you bad in writing good English?

We Answered:

Yes, when editing my son's papers, I have to correct a lot of texting language in them. It may become common place in a few years, but right now it is not acceptable in english class.
