What is the secret to Standard, formal english writing?

We Answered:

For a start, you have committed three errors in one short sentence, which should read: "What is the secret to standard formal English writing?". That sentence might be better written as: "What is the formula for writing formal English in a standard form?"

The answer to your question in general is to study by means of books from good sources and with the help of a teacher who really knows formal English.

Grace Said:

formal english.?

We Answered:

1) Honestly, americans are a LOT less formal than koreans are. You guys say "yo" at the end of sentences usually when you're talking to people older than you, or someone you're suppose to show a lot of respect to. BUT HERE, as long as you're not cussing at them, and calling them stuff like "mee-cheen nohm ah!", then you're okay.
;)

When you go to FORMAL places such as a meeting, or when you meet the president (haha..), then OF COURSE, you have to be more formal. Say things such as, "hello. nice to meet you." Just don't say something like, "hi! wuddup? yoooo! i like them shoes you got there".

When you talk formally, you sometimes use BIG words. Or, you word things that sound more "formal". For example:

you're smart. <--- informal -ish
you are very clever/intelligent/sharp. <---- formal-ish

Also, you don't use a lot of contractions in formal talk.
We're <-- informal
We are <-- formal

2) Pronounciation is hard to describe. You just LEARN the sound with the word. Try listening to more words, and watching more american movies (even though korean dramas are so addicting).

good luck!

Help with writing a lead sentence for a formal English essay?

We Answered:

For a formal essay, don't use contractions and DO write in 3rd person. Don't use slang words. That lead sentence should sound like the other sentences in your paper, not like a casual conversation with a friend. It would help if we knew the topic or the rejected sentence. Here are examples from a FORMAL essay about the book Green Eggs and Ham:

INFORMAL example: Green eggs and ham might not sound too appetizing, but I'll bet you'd like the book about them.

FORMAL example: Sometimes a book can be more delicious than food, like Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss.

What is the difference between colloquial English and formal speech or writing?

We Answered:

Colloquial is the kind of language you use 'in the street' or with your friends, family, people you know well. You might use expressions that are slang, or that have meanings only within your group, or that are a bit vulgar.
The intention of formal speech or writing is that anyone from that language community should find it easy to understand. Using 'formal' speech doesn't necesarily mean using complex long words, just using 'standard' language.

For example using formal English I could say

'Do you want a cup of tea?'. (which is what I would say to my boyfriend's parents)

If I said

'D'ya wanna cuppa' (which is what I would say to my friends)

it would mean exactly the same, but would be more colloquial.

Hope that helps!
