English Writing Skills

Christian Said:

Improving English writing skills?

We Answered:

I will not harp on grammar, spelling, punctuation or style. I consider all of those prerequisites to good writing. My answer will address "normal writing" whose purpose is communication--business writing, professional writing, etc. I am not speaking of creative writing, which has a literary value.

Of course, as a classic hypocrite, I am not employing my recommended method right now... :)

The number one thing to focus on is logical structure. Ask yourself what is the key question that your piece of writing is intended to answer. Write it down. Tweak it if you have to. Then, identify 2 or 3 or so secondary questions, which by answering you will have comprehensively addressed the higher level, key question. If you spend a little time organizing the logic of your writing as I simplistically suggested, then share the top line answer to the key question up front, along with the structure of your "answer". The paragraphs or sections to your piece of writing will mirror this structure, organized by the secondary questions.

By the way, this is hard work--very hard work. Clear writing is a reflection of clear thinking. I find that unclear writing typically owes this fact to inadequate thinking and analysis up front.

In addition to the above, every piece of writing has a purpose and an intended audience. It is important to keep these in mind while writing. Sometimes you write for multiple audiences; e.g., you write a memo to your boss, with the clear expectation that s/he will share it with a wider audience. You would be wise to write the memo factoring in the end-audience, in addition to your boss, so that s/he does not need to spend time rewriting your work.

If I could take a course in writing, I would want it to be something a journalist would be schooled in. Good journalistic writing is quite well structured logically. Select an article from a well regarded magazine or newspaper. Spend a little time dissecting it. What was the key question? What secondary questions is the author answering to address the key question? Do the topic sentences in each paragraph or section answer these secondary questions?

Good luck to you.
