I'm the same way. People are really shocked by the way I write reports and essays. I'm shy too. They say people that are more introverted make better writers. I say do something with your talent while your young. I'm 24 and I'm just now thinking about continuing my education to pursue and english degree. After that I want to do something in journalism or technical writing. Movie critic would be really nice though.

Oh to answer your question. I would say writing skills are important, but if you're going to write a story or something, you can always go back and proofread. That's what they all do. I am like you and I don't make sure everything is grammatically correct unless I'm taking a test!

Yeah, I've had similiar problems in school where you have to write these essays in class and not being able to finish. I really had to work to improve where I could write well in a quick manner. I would just practice writing essays- like give pourself prompts like- A place i would like to visit or My Greatest Hero. Also, you could time yourself if thats something you're concerned about.

Another tip: The essay you write in class dosen't have to be perfect. If your strapped for time just try to get your message across as clear as you can. Then, work on errors you made during class.

To test speaking skills, he might be required to converse with someone. I think he will be judged on accent, proper vocabulary and usage, etc. For writing he'll probably be judged on grammar, spelling and the like.

Of course he won't have all day to take the test, so speed and efficiency will be critically important.
