English Speaking Countries

Sylvia Said:

Why do people in different english speaking countries have different accents?

We Answered:

It's because of their circle of influences , not only countries but neighborhoods within the same towns are also effected in the same way.
In America you can see great difference from city to city depending on the distance between the cities The greater distance between major cities the slower the language becomes since there is less interaction between different cultures or accents. While the closer the city the more or frequent the interaction causing a overlap or fusion of different accents. People 200 miles away by mountains from other people adapt tendencies from others less than those 100 miles away separated by flat land. And so on.

Eric Said:

Americans. Can you pick the accents between different English speaking countries. Have you travelled?

We Answered:

I can tell English speakers apart by country, and in some cases what region they are from (within the US, England and Scotland.. I can tell the difference between Essex and Birmingham and York, for instance).

It comes easy for me though, because I moved to Europe 7 years ago (I'm 27), have many foreign friends, and spent 2 years in Scotland. When I lived in Sweden, I was in immigrant language classes that included people from all over the world, including many English-speaking countries. You quickly pick up on the differences between areas.

Gary Said:

What differences have you noticed in baby names across different English speaking countries?

We Answered:

I think it's really interesting to hear what is popular in other countries. My friend from England likes to compare baby names with me and their "top 20" list is actually quite different from ours with some cross-overs.

I once mentioned how there are a lot of boys names being used for girls, and my friend seems to reply a lot with, "Oh, we don't use that for either gender, it's a surname only." Makes me wonder how some naming traditions started - and how surnames became first names etc.

:)

Debra Said:

Is there a thing called poetical drama performed around any ofthe english speaking countries?

We Answered:

OF course, any good play in verse or prose will be considered by a producer.

Betty Said:

Should all the people of English speaking countries be categorized into one ethnicity?

We Answered:

No of course not.

Which is why I, as a person of Dominican descent, personally dislike the label "Hispanic" because it groups together all of the spanish-speaking nations even though in many cases we share NOTHING in common besides language and religion.

Cuba is NOTHING like Bolivia. Just as how Jamaica is NOTHING like New Zealand. So why group them together based on language.

Eddie Said:

in English speaking countries, at what age do most people start to know the word "eradicate"?

We Answered:

this matter is dependent on home environment - a reading family will have a child reading very early, and listening intensely - the word is somewhat advanced, but for television watchers will show up commonly in cleaning products commercials - "eradicate odors from your whom with the new and improved Widget!"
A normally developing child should have encountered this word at least by age 7 or 8 - as to using it? probably not until older and writing term papers.

Discuss It!
