English Script Writing
John Said:
i am writing a script for a short story for my English project please help?We Answered:
Dialogue has to serve a purpose. It can't just be a conversation or casual talk. For example, this story, as told by Redd Foxx on one of his absolutely hysterical albums:"Oh John, let's not park here."
"Oh John, let's not park."
"Oh John, let's not."
"Oh John, let's!"
"Oh John..."
"Ohhhhhhhhhhhh!"
Very simple dialogue, yet it tells a very sophisticated story at each step along the way. There's indecision, rejection, resistance, submission, emotion, and climax.
This very simple joke demonstrates the power of dialogue done right. Whatever the characters are saying has to have impact, and it has to serve the story.
Your dialogue should begin by conveying the distain that Prince Prospero and his guests have for the peasant peons who are suffering from the Plague. Their words should demonstrate that they are enjoying their masquerade ball and how they indifferent to the plight of the common man. You can also have them react to the various colored rooms within the castle, including the creepy one that's colored blood red.
When the mysterious stranger in the death mask appears, your dialogue should show how their curiosity and fear begin to develop. Their words should show a claustrophobic response to the narrow passages and dark rooms and shadows within the castle.
As Prospero begins to pursue the stranger from room to room, his words should convey his insult and anger at this disruptive person, who had the gall to show up in a terrible costume that is frightening his guests.
Then, in the blood red room, his words should show shock and terror as he confronts the one in the red mask. We never actually see what he sees, but it should be clear from his words just how horrible it is.
When Prospero dies, the words of the guests should show confusion, fear, but also outrage. After all, their host has fallen dead at the feet of this outrageous stranger.
Good luck! This is a fun story to do.

The other resource I can suggest is a blog ran by John August. John is a professional screen writer. He wrote the Tim Burton Charlie and The Chocolate Factory screenplay. He also wrote Big Fish for Tim Burton and the screenplay for Charlie's Angels. His blog is intended to help aspiring screenwriters learn the craft. He has lots of resources in including copies of his screenplays at http://www.johnaugust.com
Good luck. Sounds like a fun assignment!
