English Precis Writing

Steve Said:

Writing a precis about a movie?

We Answered:

The movie does have a thesis - and it's parallel to the thesis of the book.

Ernest Said:

Help please, How do you write a précis?

We Answered:

A precis is not an outline, but a summary or digest. It is useful as an exercise in grasping the essential ideas of an already completed composition and in stating these ideas in concentrated form. The precis shears away all elaborations of the thought and gives only what is left, in such a way as to make the summary a complete composition. It does not, therefore, skeletonize the original composition so much as it reduces its scale. They are so skillfully done that the average reader does not know that he is reading a summary. Since the precis says a great deal within a brief space, it is of great service in taking notes on library assignments and general reading.

With that said, start writing until you can get a paper of that sort. If it is 300+ pages, I would say at least 3 pages, double spaced.

Gary Said:

can u suggest me a website where i can learn english grammar and precis writing?

We Answered:

Unfortunately English grammar is a bi***. There is a rule for everything, and exception to EVERY rule and even exceptions to exceptions. If possible, you want to take a class on grammar as it is far less confusing to have someone directly on hand to ask. If for whatever reason you don't want to do a class, the following link may give some help.

Jeanette Said:

english essay and precis about "on writing"!?

We Answered:

I hope I'm correct in assuming "precis" is French for "summary." If not, I'm in trouble!

I haven't read the book, but I find that getting the main idea of any book can be done by just reading the table of context and a sentence or two in each category. Write those down to visualize the whole picture better and then draw your conclusions.

Add a few words and you have a precis. (I hope.)
