English Language Grammar

Olga Said:

What do you give more importance to,in English language : Grammar or vocabulary?

We Answered:

I give importance to both, especially when communicating in a formal setting. I dont care about my english in informal situations, as long as the other person gets what i'm saying, including my profanities lol

@Ashiya, you have a valid point there (sidenote). Its "all of you" and not "you all" ROFL

edit: You should come to the cricket section sometime Ashiya. We have some of the best English professors there, who will scrutinize and correct every error you make. Ask Mamba for more details lol

Elizabeth Said:

What purpose does an underscore serve - if any - in the English language/grammar?

We Answered:

In handwritten manuscripts, titles of books (which can be broken down into chapters,) and the names of magazines and newspapers (which can be broken down into articles,) would be underlined/underscored. The correct manuscript punctuation for the shorter works (chapters and articles) is to put those titles in quotation marks. Titles of short stories are also designated by quotation marks. The general rule is that if a titled work has sub-sections that are titled, the main title is underlined and the subtitles are put in quotes. Titles that have no smaller divisions under them are put in quotes.

What, if any, spoken English-language grammar mistakes are made by Germans?

We Answered:

Two great example are "when" for "if" (German wenn means if) and "become" for "get" (bekommen means to get). The last one can be particularly amusing: "I'm becoming the bread."

Sometimes, too, I hear Germans using the subjective case where a native speaker would normally use the objective case, e.g. "Who is that? That is he." (Wer ist das? Das ist er.)

Pronunciation "errors" are frequently encountered as well. For instance, the following list

* "sht" for "st" in the beginning of words (stay pronounced shtay),
* the German r sounds more like an English w sometimes,
* not pronouncing the "th" sound distinctively,
* using z for s (mostly at the beginning of a word)
using v for w
* devoicing some voiced consonants at the end of a word (b, d, g, v, and z become p, t, k, and s)
* saying the aw sound short
* using "pure" vowels instead of diphthongs for ay and oh
* not using the "dark L" at the end of a word

Do you think the computer has contributed to the decline of the English language/grammar?

We Answered:

Yes, I agree. It makes people look unintelligent when they don't use proper english...let's face it, it isn't that difficult. Unfortunately language is always developing. I think that when they have developed effective and wide spread voice recognition for computers then this type of thing should correct itself.
