English Grammar Learning

Penny Said:

should i focus on learning english grammar and maths at the same time or just choose one subject first?

We Answered:

If you have the opportunity to learn math from someone who is speaking English, that would be great. Otherwise, take math and English at the same time anyway and try to use the English you learn to explain the math you are learning. I am assuming you are not studying in an English-speaking country, and if that is true, then definitely take both at the same time, and go online to look for math explanations in English! Look at sites aimed at children or teenagers who are studying math.
Don't think that knowing English grammar is enough to know English. Grammar is a tool that is used to unlock meaning in what you hear or read, and gives you the ability to organize into sentences what you want to say or write. English grammar is not English, just like boards and hammers and nails are not a box.

Eileen Said:

Please suggest me the best publication(or Author's name) for learning English Grammar.?

We Answered:

There is no one text book I can suggest.

First, decide whether you are learning English as a second language or improving your abilities with English, your mother tongue. Point: Specialized textbooks exist for learning English as a second language. Moreover, more specialized ones exist to help you score well on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) exam. Another category of manuals are those that teach you how to score points on standard entrance examinations, e.g., the GMAT, SAT, ACT.

Second, how far have you progressed in school? I learned little grammar before I was 36 years old, long after I had finished my college education. At that time, I started with an eighth grade and a tenth grade textbook. Both were too difficult because they expected me to know concepts that I didn't know yet. So I tried a seventh grade, introductory handbook that I found in a used book store. It was simple enough, and I worked through every exercise in the grammar section. Then I went back to the 8th and 10th grade textbooks, and I could do them. Eventually, I studied a difficult 1950s college level handbook, and the only way I could succeed was by referencing about seven other grammar textbooks.

In conclusion, I found learning grammar to be an incremental process, with which several books were necessary.

The critical thing to learn is how to 'diagram a sentence' or parse each word in a sentence into its part of speech. You can learn this skill on the internet. As for textbooks, I suggest going into a college bookstore or an online bookstore, and browsing the pages of each book to decide whether the text is too easy, too difficult or just right for your current skill set.

Good luck.

Do you know of any websites for learning basic English grammar?

We Answered:

I have found two while searching for teaching materials (I teach 5th and 6th grade English). I also suggest getting a Harbrace College Handbook from your local bookstore as a resource tool.

http://eleaston.com Actually an ESL site, but has some interesting items, including on-line quizzes for grammar, punctuation and vocabulary, and categorized word lists. You have to explore it a bit to find everything

http://grammar.ccc.commnet.edu/grammar Tons of information on grammar and writing, as well as quizzes. It is more for upper elementary grades.

Eric Said:

learning english grammar?

We Answered:

http://www.learnenglish.de is a great resource for grammar exercises that I often use with my students.

The BBC learning English website has some good exercises, too and is a good place to see grammar in a real-life context.

The best thing of all, though, is to book some lessons with an English teacher once a week so he or she can give you specific guidance in the areas you need to work on.

Robin Said:

Are there any good websites for learning English spelling, grammar, et cetera?

This site will probably help you at any level of study.

English Grammar?

We Answered:

There isn't really a specific book. If you are taking a course with a school or something, you should ask for extra help, and if you aren't, just go talk to as many people as possible. Remember that you don't have to have perfect grammar while you are learning. If you don't practice, you won't learn the spoken grammar. Besides, it doesn't make much sense to me, and I am a native English Speaker.
Good luck!
