English For Esl Students

Ivan Said:

How do I explain the word "occasionally" to ESL students?

We Answered:

synonyms.

sometimes, once in awhile. not all the time. write out a list of words from never, occasionally, sometimes, usually, frequently, always. etc... so they can see the progression and get an idea of what it means.

HI EVERYONE ! I NEED HELP WITH ENGLISH !!!! ESL STUDENT !!!! thanks a loooooooooooooot !!!?

We Answered:

in order:
1. as a team
2. you should define what "we" is, even if it is the conclusion
3. what kind of crimes?
4. new thinking (find a synonym for "thinking") and new technology are key (not keys)
5. don't say "we saw that crime rates went up," say something like "In conclusion, crimes rates are decreasing in BC, as provided by statistics published by (who?) in 2006"
That's not a great sentence, but don't say we. It's an awkward sentence with the clauses. Did you only talk about gang-related crimes? If the study was only about gang crimes, don't say included.
6. don't say we!
7. "Until we keep" is awkward. "It is important to improve" might work.
8. appropriate schooling, not schoolings
9. don't say creating, it doesn't match the clause before it. you could say "and create supportive..."
10. comma after communities
11. never say should in a conclusion. your paper should have stated that it will go down.
12. end with a bang. why is it good for crime rates to go down?

Clinton Said:

How can I establish classroom rules for ESL students when their English is limited?

We Answered:

Use pictures that illustrate your point. Browse PECS (picture exchange communication system) for ideas. For example, "be on time" instead of listing a printed rule, use a laminated card that shows a student at their desk with a clock showing 8:00 sharp, or something like that.
Also I agree that a practical approach is to get a bilingual person to translate your rules. In addition, don't hesitate to use a Spanish/English dictionary. If you understand the basics of Spanish grammar (without which you will have difficulty locating or applying the appropriate words), it can be very useful.
