English For Beginners

Sherri Said:

Simple books for English beginners.?

We Answered:

go to any library and look for books with easy vocabulary but high interest. Reading teachers and special education teachers can help you as well. You can also go into a good book store and explain what you are looking for and the staff there should be able to direct you to the right kinds of books.

Group excercises for English conversation classes?

We Answered:

Hi, I recommend dividing the class into two teams and giving them a simple debate topic - one team is for it, the other is against it.
Our French teacher did this with us in high school. The topic was "Should students have to wear uniforms to school?"

Kelly Said:

What novels would you recommend for beginners in English to read?

We Answered:

Don't start with translations.

Perhaps short stories would be more helpful. Hemingway, Fitzgerald, and Flannery O'Connor are straightforward prose. Alternately, their novels usually are straightforward.

Hemingway is widely recognized as a clear prose writer. The "best" stories for your purposes are the Nick Adams stories (e.g. The Big Two-Hearted River) and The Killers. Avoid his "Hills Like White Elephants" for your purposes. Novels: A Farewell to Arms and The Sun Also Rises.

Fitzgerald short stories: Bernice Bobs Her Hair; selections from Flappers and Philosophers.

O'Connor: A Good Man Is Hard to Find.

Novels known for clarity: Jane Austen's Pride and Predjudice and Truman Capote's In Cold Blood

EDIT@John S.--yes! Orwell is a great recommendation.

Morris Said:

hi, i would like to have a simple play for a very English beginners?

We Answered:

Do you mean a play to perform or a play to attend? Assumming you mean to put on a play, I would recommend a toned down version of either Wizard of Oz or Peter Pan. Both are fairly simple stories that most people are familiar with the basics of, so it shouldn't be too difficult to perform. Also, the size of the cast can be easily changed, depending on how many Munchkins/Lost Boys/Pirates you want to have.
