English Cursive Writing

Travis Said:

When writing Russian, are all the letters in one word joined together like in cursive English?

We Answered:

Yes, there is cursive writing in Russian, just like in English and the letters in a same word are joined together.

Alex Said:

who invent english cursive writing?

We Answered:

The term "Cursive" is a broad term to describe styles of writing where the letters connect, and samples of it can be seen as far back as the middle ages. Its purpose was purely for speed since there are fewer pen lifts in cursive as opposed to textura (print). And that is true btw. If someone takes time to learn cursive effectively, it is much faster, and easier on the wrist than print, but you do have to practice. It seems to me it was only with the developement of a style known as "copperplate" which is seen in the colonial times that cursive became decorative. (though there are some medeval styles that were semi cursive but still highly decorative.)

Modern cursive probably derives from copperplate, and is more designed to be used with a ball point pen, which is why I feel schools do a sevear disfavor teaching students cursive with a pencil.

Carol Said:

Is German Cursive Different from English Cursive?

We Answered:

No, they're both the same. It's called Schreibschrift (script).

Dora Said:

Why is cursive so little used to write English these days?

We Answered:

well in some schools around the world it is being thought in elementary schools and middle school still, but as people (children) get older the see other people now mostly writing the other way and the want to do the same...plus personally when i write in cursive it takes too long.

Ben Said:

Is the use of cursive writing over?

We Answered:

Yes, cursive is faster, but since most people develop text on the computer, the user of hand written material has dwindled to signatures and the occasional chicken scratch note taped on the fridge.

In short, people aren't using cursive enough to keep it legible and obviously cursive becomes illegible much faster than block lettering.

Occasionally I still get letters from people who write (in cursive). I am touched that they took the time ... and pissed off that they're so hard to read.

There are many more for which you can download free worksheets and more. Another method which has been very effective for our children is "Cursive First". You might want to check it out. I've known several other families who have had great success with this program too. After reading more about it, you'l most likely agree with the findings. It is very affordable and the developer allows you to make copies without any copyright stipulations. Huge perk! Good luck!
