I would start with google and see if you can find a site with the Republican Party Platform from 1860. If you can find it, you will find that the Republican Party ran on an agenda of stopping slavery in the territories not the immediate abolition of slavery.

You may also want to google for Lincoln speeches. In the early part of the Civil War, Lincoln's emphasis was on the preservation of the Union.

While the historical record shows that preserving slavery was the reason for the rebellion, ending slavery became one of the objectives only around the middle of the war (after the Emancipation Proclamation).

It's not that it is being taught wrong, just sloppy.

i'm not saying i completely understand what your asking however,

composition is creating a work, to be read such as a book,
while
rhetoric is talking (as a rule) and would be written more in dialog style.

both are written form, but the style of presentation would be different.

both can be creative writing or not.

that depends on the work, and the subject. Take in part a news story, that consists of composition and embraces the rhetoric (in quotes) that people have given regarding the subject.

other news stories are strait facts with little or no editorial comment to provide history or background.

writing is an art as well as a skill.

...perhaps, write it from the point of view that they don't know what you know.....and then write about all the positives that they don't know about....

OR...talk about the influence of peers & how it is perceived that liking to write is uncool....

OR...talk about how parents influence their kids, by saying how much they hated writing and never had a nack for it

OR...talk about how some people are afraid to share their feelings in writing, because it is making personal perceptions and feelings public......

OR....how crazy English teachers make students paranoid and sick, by forcing them to write impossible essays like "Why students hate English composition" when they really do like to write.....

....OR at least they used to like to write ;)

Look up Zora Neale Hurston. She had a very unique style and your teacher/professor will be impressed that you didn't use the same authors as everyone else.
