I understand that you are lacking skills rather in expressing yourself in front of others than reading or writing in English.
Therefore, search for an offer of "English Cafe" (or something similar) in your neighbourhood, where you can meet and chat with native speakers for a low fee.
Like this you will get used to hearing the language, and, since it's one-on-one, the learning effect will be biggest, as you cannot hide and you will HAVE to speak.
I guess that it is speaking practice you need most, which is something that movies and books - albeit useful to improve your vocabulary - will not be able to convey.
In the end, there surely are presentation classes on offer somewhere, but I cannot tell whether you should start with something like that already or proceed there via some "English Cafe" type of course.

If you meanNew York City, I think you could improve your skills simply by spending a day shopping. Theres alot of speaking involved, if you're with someone else. If you mean the state of New York in general, then I would suggest getting some kind of tour, in a garden or something to that effect. You could learn something new and improve your speaking skills.

Memorise few paragraphs, like starting with "quote", joke and your experience, make some neutral paragraphs, use them when it is required, I have done that, and believe me it works

Get them to tune in to the BBC world service. It mainly does documentries and news, with radio plays on weekends. I recommend this over a local English radio station, as this would allow them to improve their general knowledge as well as practise proper pronounciation(American accents can vary, but BBC announcers have the standard upper-middle class accent ). Check the World Service website to see the frequency for your local radio or use a shortwave radio. You can also give them simple books to read. Enid Blyton's collection of short children's stories are good for people with a basic grasp of the language. Depending on their language proficiency, you can give them Assesment books to practise as well. You can find a range of them in your local stationer's or on the internet.
