If you mean in UK, they get career advice at school. Then they decide whether to stay on after sixteen and study for a higher exam, or to leave and work in a lesser paid job,such as shop assistant, or manual work, and after a while they get promoted if they are efficient.

Those who stay on at school have a similar choice at eighteen: go to work after their Advanced Level or apply to go to university.Those who opt to work at that stage apply to banks, offices, etc...Those who go to university generally choose a subject at which they are likely to be good or in which they have a special interest.When they graduate they apply for executive or professional jobs. They may end up in a career that has absolutely nothing to do with what they have studied, depending on circumstances.

There is a special kind of person who is good at recognising opportunities, will take risks, have a brilliant career and end up millionaires although they have no qualifications.
Often a career happens to you rather than you chose it. If you are at the right place at the right time, fate decides for you.

Unheard of and scary to adults at this time in history. Look up Starkweather in Texas another young thrill killer (with his girlfriend, Carol Ann). The movies The Frighteners and Natural Born Killers, were based on the true story of Starkweather.


Or the power the media has on the public...Orson Wells...a young man broadcasted a radio program based on HG Wells, "War of the World", on Halloween night it created widespread panic. People actually thought we were being invaded by aliens. Orson Wells became a motion picture icon...it was only the beginning of the power of the media. And science fiction would never be the same.
