English Academic Writing
Julio Said:
Will writing fiction affect my academic writing? We Answered:
Yes, your fiction will affect your style, but that's what learning is supposed to be. If you write academically, you'll develop skills in academic writing. But writing of any kind, when done propoerly, will make you a better writer in every genre and style. I write both academic and fiction, and each has served me well in the other field. Writer, write, write - that's what you should do.Joanne Said:
Do colleges look at just your composite score or your combined english/writing score? We Answered:
Yes, they do!! It sucks because I had to fight to get into my 4 year college that I'm in now. I was never a good test taker or at least standardize tests. I graduated high school with a 3.4 and was very active at school but bombed the SATs I took 3 times, and the ACT. I was denied unfortunately. I guess try to do your best and fight for it because I would have been in community college my first 2 years. Early acceptance is always better! Good Luck!Stacey Said:
grade 10 academic english exam?We Answered:
You can`t exactly study for an English exam, but be sure to skim your notes! Moreover, consider re-reading Twelfth Night and `To Kill a Mockingbird (or you could, instead, write a summary on each part or chapter.)Jean Said:
academic writing anyone?We Answered:
I'd be happy to help you with your writing. A few good resources to look into are the OWL at Purdue Universityhttp://owl.english.purdue.edu/
You could also look into obtaining a tutor through your university's learning skills center. Check with the counseling department or a faculty member you feel comfortable talking with.
Academic writing is a full-time job sometimes, but it is by far the most rewarding and fulfilling form of work I've encountered. The thrill of seeing your ideas and thoughts come together on the page is immeasurable.
I'd be happy to look over any of your writing and reply with detailed comments and suggestions for what to repeat and how to improve.
I like to think of academic writing as the process of building a river. Your reader gets into a boat the minute they start reading, and they need to be kept on a smooth path through your paper. Any jarring or sudden changes in direction will make the reader uneasy and will distract them from being able to focus on your points.
The whole process should begin with a clear idea of your thesis. What is your question that you will attempt to answer through your writing? Remember that the English word "essay" derives from the French "to attempt," and that the original essays were all efforts by thinkers and scientists to uncover truths and ideas at work in our society. Start your writing with a question about your topic, and gradually add to that question. So, for example, you might start with:
What was the impact of the Roman emperor Hadrian on the history of Rome?
Okay, but that's a huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge question. You'd need five volumes of encyclopedias to answer half of it! So...
What was the impact of the Roman emperor Hadrian's architectural program on the history of construction in the Roman empire?
Better. Now we've got it narrowed down a little bit more. But it can be made even more focused.
What was the impact of the Roman emperor Hadrian's architectural program on the construction of public baths in the later Roman empire?
Now we're at a more focused point, and we can make the most efficient use of time and effort when we conduct our research.
Research. That's the next step, and the one that will determine the course and eventual result of your papers. When you have a topic in mind, your initial step is to conduct a literature review. This means reading everything you can find on your topic (which is why it is very important to start with a narrowly defined topic!). You don't have to read every word, but you do need to understand the conclusions that other scholars have reached and how they reached them.
When you do your research, you'll need to be prepared to feel overwhelmed at first. Use your library's resources: online journals, books and periodicals in the library, and any other publications that are accepted as "scholarship"-check with your professor if you're unsure about a source's validity.
I usually start with journals and then mine the bibliographies of the articles I find for deeper sources. Consider that for strong academic writing, primary sources (original authors) are best. So, if you find a great quote in an article, go find the book or article that quote came from and read the original author's words instead.
A last point I'll make here is that academic writing is very much a process-oriented activity. You need to be attentive to how your ideas will change throughout your writing process. Don't get married to a conclusion before you start doing your research, and definitely don't get married to anything in your writing. You have to be flexible when you write, and be willing to adjust your ideas to account for new information.
That's perhaps the most critical aspect of academic writing: if you encounter an idea that is related to your topic, and which challenges a conclusion you had formed from your research, you are obligated to address that new information in your writing.
Again, feel free to message me with questions.
