A lot of people might tell you to sign up for creative writing courses, but as far as developing skills and techniques that will directly benefit you in other classes (and later in life), I recommend any classes that deal with "literary criticism" or "expository writing." They basically involve reading a lot and then writing essays on what you've read. You get to be creative but at the same time there is a structure to this kind of writing that you won't usually get with creative writing classes. Not everyone likes having to write this much, but if you haven't been required to do a lot of writing thus far, you'll definitely feel proud of yourself who you produce a paper like "Symbols of Life & Death in Franz Kafka's Metamorphosis."

An example from the course catalog at the school I once attended:

"This course presupposes some familiarity with a range of readings, but the core text is F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, which we will examine through various critical perspectives: psychological, sociological, and historical. We will examine some theories of literature and their critical methods, with frequent imitative exercises and a final paper in which you will be able to demonstrate sophisticated use of one of more of these critical approaches in the discussion of another novel."

Lots of "critical" this and that = lots of serious, thoughtful writing.

First you need to develop good reading skills. Then writing will follow on its own.
First of all, tune ur mind to think in English, and not in ur mother tongue.
Then everyday, make a habit of reading atleast 1 page of a newspaper loudly. Listen carefully what u r reading, and remember where u made mistakes. Read that para again, until u stop fumbling at a difficult word.
Learn a new word everyday. Maintain a diary for such words, find a new word in the newspaper/tv, write it down in ur diary, refer the dictionary to get its meaning, write it down too. Make up a good sentence using the word.
Refer to this diary everyday. Then try to use the words u learn in daily life.
That way, you will be improving both ur reading as well as writing skills.
Read a lot of books on ur favourite topics.
Practice normal day to day dialogues u will be using when u meet people, like "Good morning, how are you today?", or "May I know who is speaking" to use on the phone.. or
"Kindly help me with this matter"
