it means that you went too far in your personal opinions (i'm assuming it was a critical essay, meaning analytical like a book report?) and you probably went off and elaborated on your own experiences and how they relate to your topic.
in english, there's two types of essay: the critical and creative. there is no such thing as "normal writing", the word normal would be relative to what the teacher is asking you. next time, just make sure you know what the teacher is looking for, and follow the rules closely, and go deeper into your personal opinions/ideas in a creative. criticals are way more boring to write,not gonna lie, but theyre more straightforwards too. just go by the structure, and youll be fine!

I recently wrote a piece for English that dealt with death of a loved one. I wrote it with a time-changing format that my teacher said was good.

In this order
A: Describing a funeral, from the third person view of a woman - you show she has suffered a loss by the people who keep offering condolences
B: Flashback to the day her husband proposed
C: Flashback to a time closer to the present, her wedding day
A: She is startled back into the present at the funeral, by which it should now be clear is her husband's.

It's good for showing changes in character, dramatic irony (the young couple don;t know about the tragic end to their married life), detail and description plus is very sad and moving.

In mine, I focused on one particular detail, the flower foxglove: there were foxgloves at the funeral, foxgloves in the field where he proposed and foxgloves at the wedding reception. Her memories of the flower should be sweet but are tainted. It tied each section together, and as a suggestion perhaps you could try something similar if the inspiration strikes you?
