Correct English Writing
Hugh Said:
please help me correct my English writing? We Answered:
This robot is able to travel in along three axes, X, Y, Z (X axis for 100 mm; Y axis for 200 mm, and Z axis for 100 mm). This movement is fully supported by excellent rigidity and accuracy. The robot's arm is able to spin at a speed of 8000 rpm. In addition, its brain is guarded and protected by eight plates (two for top and buttom, two for left and right, two for rear and front). This robot is armed by a machine gun which is capable of firing 11 bullets in one burst. Once you press the button, the gun can be fully re-loaded in five seconds. "Ray Said:
Which of the following pairs of expressions are correct in English writing ?We Answered:
1.1 Cities of the Future3.1 She has fainted.
One might quibble about the others.
2.1 "cities in the future" is the obvious one, but "cities in future" is possible (because "in the future" means "in some time to come", but "in future" means "from now on"). So you can imagine a politican saying after a major flood, "In Britain, all major cities in future will have a flood warning system".
4.1. Why did they not panic? is probably the better if this is standalone, but "Why were they not panicked ..." is perfectly idiomatic, especially as part of a longer sentence. Check out Google News and Books links for examples of "not panicked by" as a construct.
