Advanced English Writing

Eduardo Said:

what are good books that will expand my vocabulary and that will prepare me for year 11 advanced English?

We Answered:

I know a few books that WILL help out a lot. Or at least, when I needed it, it had what I was looking for and all I had to do was apply what I got to my problem. Anyway, the book is called English Grammar for Dummies. It is very detailed and really thick. It is written by Geraldine Woods. The second book I thought of was Advanced English Grammar by Helen Hoyt Schmidt, I'm not sure if it's a good book though 'cause I only got the recommendation from a teacher. The third book is Understanding and Using English Grammar by Betty Schrampfer Azar and Stacy A. Hagen.

Now, for a good book that you won't be able to put down, I'll give some of the ones I couldn't not read. First is Undine by Freidrich de la Motte Foque(pardon me if the spelling is wrong). It is my personal favorite. The second is The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, I absolutely loved it! Next is Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro, writer of The Remains of The Day. Never let me go will have a movie by the way. And the last is Snow Country by Yasunari Kawabata.

James Said:

What words can i use when writing an advanced english paper to replace "is"

We Answered:

If you can't use "be," your best bet is to avoid using adjectives and think of a verb instead that conveys your meaning. Also you'd not be able to use any passive voice because by definition passive includes "be."

The words you've listed would need nouns after them, and they are a good start. Otherwise, try thinking of a verb you can use to take the place of "be" plus an adjective. Here is an example of what I'm saying: He was very hungry=He really wanted to eat.

Two other words for your list: displays, illustrates.
