Writing An Objective For A Resume

Sheila Said:

whats an objective when writing a resume?

We Answered:

It's what you're looking to find in a job.

As someone who actually coaches resume-writing, I'll tell you that Objective is really just a waste of space. No one pays attention to it, because it's usually meaningless ("I want to find a position in a dynamic environment that utilizes my outstanding skills and drive.")

Instead, use your cover letter to briefly summarize what you are looking for, and how you are a perfect fit for the position.

Casey Said:

I need help with writing an objective for my resume?

We Answered:

Objectives are actually falling out of favor since they really don't add any value to the resume. Instead, I suggest including a "branding statement" that highlights your high level skills and experience. For example, you might say something like:

"Multifaceted and customer-focused professional, offering both a recent degree in Cosmetology and hands on Administrative and Retail Management experience."

This, of course, is just an idea. You would want to make certain that it really speaks to your strengths.

I am attaching a link to a blog entry entitled, "What Makes a Good Objective Statement."
