Write Your Resume

Tracey Said:

How do you write your resume after being locked up?

We Answered:

My advice would be to leave the gap in the resume. An employer will not deny an interview based on this gap, but this will allow him the opportunity to explain during the interview.

Being completely honest about his situation is the best way to impress any future employer. My best recommendation is to personally hand in his resume wherever he applies, this gives him the opportunity to make a great first impression.

Caroline Said:

What do you write on your resume if you have no experience?

We Answered:

It's intimidating to fill out an application form when you have no previous jobs. If you have done co-op or volunteer work, include it. If you have absolutely no experience, make sure it is clear in the education section that you are still in school.

The application is simply a means to get you an interview, where you will be able to sell yourself. Many retail managers are used to seeing applications with blank experience. This doesn't necessarily mean you wont get an interview.

Many managers would prefer someone with no experience. Whether the new employee has previous experience or not, there will need to be training. Many managers would prefer to invest time in training someone with no experience, instead of 'untraining' someone with experience out of bad habits.

Annie Said:

Can an employer legally write on your resume?

We Answered:

The explanation I was given, years ago, was to protect the employer from discrimination charges. If you wrote a yes, on a purple person, but not a green one, they could construe, that is the reason, but that there is no law regarding it.

Shirley Said:

How long did it take you to write your resume?

We Answered:

That depends entirely on how many jobs she has, how many skills she has, how complicated those jobs were. If she doesn't know how to use a computer, her jobs will have been pretty basic, and any job she finds will be pretty basic, so it might take you a half hour to put it together. However, any jobs she applies for that don't require computer are going to require her to fill out an application, and they won't care if she has a résumé or not.

Javier Said:

Is it polite to write about all your virtues in your resume?

We Answered:

Honesty is polite. Write about yourself the way you really think of yourself. However, beware to not look boast. Neither exaggerate, nor underestimate. Besides, I agree that your virtues should correlate with your previous work and achievements.
All in all, writing a resume is a piece of work, because you have to think over every word, every sentence. There's a nice online service http://www.resumesexperts.com that prepares resumes for different positions in a way that both you and your interviewer will like. Might try.
