Tips For Resumes

Delores Said:

Handing out resumes today, any good tips? What do people look for when hiring?

We Answered:

First thing I look for is a smile and someone that looks me in the eye! I would suggest wearing something mature and appropriate, like the type of clothes/outfits they sell. And it sometimes is a good idea to find out who the person in charge of hiring is going to be there. Often, you can get a job the same day you hand over your resume. If you do get an interview emphasize that you would treat this job with importance and always be on time!

Ideas for name of my home business helping people with their resume, interview tips, posting their resumes ect

We Answered:

Spend some time to look at what is on the Web now, and what you could imitate locally without spending a lot of money on.

And when you've thought of a name that's unique, immediately buy the *.com domain. Don't test for it on one of those WHOIS sites, because others watch and then buy the site so they can sell it to you at a big profit.

Just on inspiration I wrote <resumex.com> on the URL line of my browser. The name is taken already, by a sophisticated outfit that you might be able to learn from.

The comment (above) about misspelling is right on point. Why doesn't anyone take advantage of Y!'s integrated spell check? For your business, get in the habit of ALWAYS using MS Word's spell check. Your clients may not know how to spell. Indeed, I have (for when I write in French) a Québec software called "Correcteur 101" that not only checks spelling and grammar, but style as well. I wonder if such software exists in English? Anyone who deals in written matter for the general public -- and your kind of essays in particular -- ought to have something like that.

Hey I need some resume tips. I'm going for work experience at magazines and i need some stand out wow! points?

We Answered:

You should probably be thinking portfoilio more than resume. Try putting together a collection of the most professional writing you have done...

On your resume, most companies prefer one's that have a simple lay out with little white space. This shows that you had a lot to put on the thing. It is more about the words than the format. Have a section for education(college), experience(internships/jobs/syudy abroads), special skills(excel, in design, that sort of thing), and activities (if you are in any industry related clubs/hold a position of leadership in anything).

Be sure to use a lot of actionable verbs....

ex: coordinated and organized all sports article

managed a staff of over 50 employees

That sort of thing...

Good Luck

Truck Driver Positions -resume tips?? Has anyone got any tips for how to set out a resume for truck driving?

We Answered:

Do you already have a CDL (commercial drivers license). If not, you can go to truck-driving school. Most companies will pay for your school if you stay with them a minimum time. The school will help get you a job and your CDL. All the companies recruit. If you have less than 2 years experience, you will probably have to go with one of the bigger carriers like Swift, Werner, etc. If you have 2 years over the road experience, there are many better jobs available. Swift had a bad reputation for a long time but has made big improvements. Higher pay, better trucks, etc. They're working hard to keep drivers.

A few companies have their own schools. I think Schneider (the orange trucks) does. They will pay for a bus ticket to get there and a room while you train. Also, you will ride with a trainer for about 6 weeks before they turn you loose. It's a great job for the right person.

There is no resume for truck drivers. Your DAC (what your MVR becomes after you get CDL) is your resume. They will pull up your DAC to see everyone you worked for, how long and any violations you have had. It can be alot of fun if you team or have a rider, but it gets very lonely out there. It's worth it if you can handle the lifestyle because it is a complete lifestyle. You'll only go home every 3 weeks or so, so you live in your truck. It's worth checking into.
