Resume For Job

Willie Said:

How would I make a job resume if I have never worked before?

We Answered:

As a job hunting expert and author, let me answer your question for you. Many people will simply walk into retail stores to apply for jobs without a resume. And that's because lots of them, like yourself, are looking for their first job. However, having a resume makes you appear more professional and that can make a difference between your getting the job vs somebody else! So yes, I would suggest you put a resume together.

And for you, a functional resume is your best bet. This type of resume focuses on your skills and what you can do. So it's geared for somebody who has little or no work experience. And the basic structure is pretty simple. You have your contact info at the very top so employers know who you are and how to get a hold of you. T

hen you'd have a skills section that outlines what you offer employers. For instance, your being a responsible person. Or somebody that can be trusted. In other words, anything you bring to the table that an employer would like and be impressed by. And you can include anything from school that makes you look good. For example, if you won any awards or received some honors. Or if you held an office, like class treasurer.

You'd also have a section for your education. If you're still in school, then you'd put when you will be graduating. This way, employers will know how close to graduation you are. If you actually graduated, then you'd put the year in which you graduated. And if you want, you can include info about the kinds of classes you took or are taking. And any honors or awards you've won, or offices you've held.

My book, which is available at many libraries has a sample of a functional resume for you to follow. Lots of other books and resources on the net have this info too. So it's very easy to find the basic layout.

Alicia Said:

What should an excellent cover letter of a resume/job application included?

We Answered:

Cover letters are suppose to highlight skills you can bring to that specific job and a little bit about yourself. You should not write it in a super stiff fashion. Write how you would talk (with exceptions of course). But it should sound natural and not a forced essay.
