Job Resume Writing

Vernon Said:

Writing a resume with no job experience?

We Answered:

I would include all of that. Include your school, honors and award, extracurriculars, volunteer work, and little "jobs" you've done. Ask the people you babysat for for references. Don't include these in you resume but have them handy before an interview. When you go in for an interview, dress professionally (no jeans).

Good luck!

Grrr!!!! Don't you hate resume writing and job searching!?

We Answered:

Everyone who looks at a (your) resume will have a different opinion. People have different and varying education and backgrounds, and everyone expects something different from a resume. The trick is to find a format and style that highlights your positive attributes and accurately documents your education, accomplishments, and job history. Then go with that, keeping in mind you may have to adapt your resume to diffierent job openings. Finding a job is no easy task. It's easy to become frustrated and give up. Stay positive, stay persistent, and most importantly, be confident and honest. Best Wishes!

What are some tips to writing a job winning resume?

We Answered:

Don't under or over sell yourself.

Keep it brief, include the details but don't get into life history.

Start with your most recent job working backwards.

Instead of listing the duties you've done, write down your achievements and responsibilities.

Say why you want this particular job.

Say what makes you suitable for the job.

Make sure you read the job description and match your skills to that.

Don't lie about anything, it could come back to bite you on the bum later!

Have excellent spelling and grammar. Bad writing standards won't look good.

Start with an objective, one or two lines about your best qualities and why you're good at what you do.

Most of all don't try to come across as something you're not, if you're just yourself, writing about things you know then you can't slip up.

God luck!

Help on writing a resume for a waitress job?

We Answered:

There's lots of resume help available online. Check out monster.com, careerbuilder.com or many many other websites for templates and advice. Yes, you want to include the volunteer work, especially if it's recent and you don't have much other professional experience. Waitressing jobs are looking for people who have these skills: customer service, time management, cash handling, sales. They also want someone hard working and able to manage multiple tasks in an ever-changing environment. Here's a piece from my server resume: Ensured prompt and courteous attention to customer needs while providing superb overall customer support. Utilized organization skills to manage business resources, including time and money. Employed a positive attitude to build team synergy.
Hope this helps!
