You've written a very nice letter - one of the best I've seen.

I don't see anything wrong with using it as the body of the e-mail, as well as attaching a formatted copy, should the recipient wish to print it. It's not too long for that purpose. (You may want to combine the letter and resume into a single file. If you do that, place the cover letter at the end. That way, someone opening the resume attachment will see a resume first, as expected.)
